Voge DS900X engine oil and filter change
The complete oil and filter service on the DS900X: warm-up, drain, filter access, the 3.2 litre refill quantity and the level check that requires the motorcycle to be upright.
Tools
- 8 mm hex socket
- Oil filter wrench
- Torque wrench (5-60 Nm)
- Drain pan, funnel, gloves
Parts
- Engine oil to the grade in the owner manual
- Oil filter cartridge
- Drain plug sealing washer
The oil change on the DS900X is a straightforward operation. Two details account for most of the difficulties encountered: the sealing washer on the drain plug and the requirement that the motorcycle stand genuinely upright before the level is read.
Torque figures are listed in the DS900X torque table. They should be cross-checked against the manual supplied with the motorcycle, since figures vary between model years.
Preparation
The engine is run for three to five minutes so that the oil flows freely, then left to stand for a minute. Hot oil drains more completely but presents a scalding risk; warm oil is the appropriate compromise.
The motorcycle is placed on its centre stand or a paddock stand so that it sits vertical. On the side stand the level reads high and the engine is consequently underfilled.
Draining
- Position the drain pan beneath the sump.
- Loosen the drain plug with an 8 mm hex key, then remove it by hand.
- Allow at least ten minutes for draining. The final quantity emerges slowly.
- Fit a new sealing washer. Reuse of the original washer is the most frequent cause of a weeping drain plug.
Filter
The cartridge is located on the front of the crankcase and retains a considerable quantity of oil, so a rag should be to hand.
- Unscrew the old cartridge with a filter wrench.
- Wipe the mating face clean.
- Apply fresh oil to the rubber seal of the new filter.
- Screw it on by hand until the seal makes contact, then tighten to the figure in the torque table.
Refilling
The DS900X parameter table gives an oil capacity of 3.2 litres. Oil is added slowly, stopping approximately 200 ml short of that quantity. The filler cap is refitted, the engine run for a minute and shut off, and after a further two minutes the sight glass is read with the motorcycle upright.
The level is brought to the middle of the sight glass. Overfilling is more damaging than slight underfilling: it pressurises the crankcase and can force oil into the airbox.
After the work
- The area beneath the motorcycle should be checked for drips after the first ride.
- The service reminder is reset from the instrument menu where the motorcycle records one.
- Used oil is taken to a recycling point rather than disposed of into drainage.
