Voge maintenance schedule: what each service covers

The seven-service maintenance plan printed in the Voge owner manuals, what its I, C, R, A and L codes require, the two-year limits that override distance, and the kilometre chart for the 300 engine.

Most Voge owner manuals carry the same maintenance plan: seven services, each column stating what is due for every item. The table reproduced below is the DS525X edition, and the same plan appears in the manuals for the remainder of the range.

Reading the codes

Code Requires
I Inspect, clean, adjust or replace as necessary
C Clean
R Replace
A Adjust
L Lubricate
\ Nothing due at this service

The plan, service by service

Seven services, numbered 1 to 7 in the order they fall.

Coolant and brake fluid also carry a two-year limit, whichever falls first. That is the row the distance table conceals: a motorcycle covering 2,000 km a year still requires its coolant and brake fluid changed on time, because both degrade by absorbing water rather than by use. The procedure is set out in brake fluid on a Voge and in coolant check and top up.

About the intervals

The manual heads these columns with the numbers 1, 7, 13, 19, 25, 31 and 37. The SR450X manual prints the same heading as km x 1000 and states the first service at 1,000 km and every 6,000 km after that, so the columns read as 1,000, 7,000 and so on up to 37,000 km. The owner's own manual or service book still takes precedence, and the maintenance calculator shows what is due at the next of these services.

What the manuals state plainly is that the first service falls at the end of the 1,000 km running-in period, and that the interval is whichever arrives first, distance or time. Running-in itself is covered in running in a new Voge.

The 300 engine, which does print its kilometres

The service manual for the 300 series engine gives its chart in kilometres:

Item 500 2,000 5,000 10,000 15,000
Clutch adjustment ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
Clutch friction plate ✓ ✓
Spark plug clean and gap ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
Valve clearance ✓
Oil replacement ✓ ✓ ✓
Oil filter replacement ✓ ✓ ✓
Sprocket check ✓ ✓
Radiator check ✓ ✓
Fuel system cleaning ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
Bolts, nuts and washers ✓ ✓ ✓
Lubrication system ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓

In addition: the air filter is cleaned every 1,000 km, the spark plug cap cleaned every 4,000 km, the coolant replaced every two years, and the air filter replaced whenever it is damaged.

The three rows most commonly overlooked

The fuel filter. Replaced at every service from the second onward. On most of these models it sits inside the tank, where it never receives a casual glance, and a blocked one presents as an engine that dies under load.

Lubrication of the pivots. Eleven rows of the table consist of nothing but L: side stand, footrest shafts, lever shafts, linkage and swingarm bearings. Omitting them is what converts a five-minute grease job into a seized bearing, a point the 300 Rally bearings and side stand page illustrates with the component that fails first.

The chain at services 4 and 7. The plan expects a chain and sprocket set to be replaced rather than adjusted indefinitely. The adjustment between those points is covered in chain tension and lubrication.

The individual figures each of these rows requires are set out in engine oil grades and capacities, spark plugs and electrode gaps, valve clearances, brake pad specifications and the air filter. The manual for a given model is on its model page.
