Voge idle speeds and engine data by model

The idle speed each Voge manual specifies with its tolerance, what a reading outside the band indicates, and the bore, stroke, compression and power figures including the DS625X A2 rating.

Idle speed is the figure consulted when an engine hunts, stalls at junctions or sits noticeably high after a cold start. Every Voge manual prints it with a tolerance, and the number varies across the range more than the shared engine architecture suggests.

The idle speeds

Revolutions per minute.

Model Idle speed
DS900X 1250 ± 100
DS625X 1300 ± 100
500R 1300 ± 100
SR4 Max 1450 ± 100
650DSX 1500 ± 100
FR150 1500 ± 100
300 Rally 1500 ± 150
SR3 1700 ± 100
SR1 1700 ± 150
SR1 ADV 1700 ± 150
SR16 1700 ± 150
SR450X 1300 ± 100
125R 1600 ± 150
525RR 1300 ± 100
250RR 1500 ± 150
250 Rally 1500 ± 150

The pattern is consistent: the larger the engine, the lower the idle. A single of 125 cc requires more crankshaft speed to run smoothly than a twin of 900 cc, and the figures reflect that rather than any difference in tuning philosophy.

What the tolerance means

Every figure is printed with a band, generally plus or minus 100 rpm. Within that band the engine is behaving as specified. A DS900X sitting at 1200 or at 1330 rpm is not faulty.

Outside the band the condition merits investigation.

  • Idling high indicates a throttle cable with no free play, a sticking throttle body, an air leak downstream of the throttle, or a cold engine that has not completed its warm-up enrichment. The last of these resolves itself within a few minutes.
  • Idling low, or hunting up and down, indicates an air leak, a dirty throttle body or a fuelling fault. A blocked air filter contributes to the same picture.

Where a fault code has been stored, the engine warning light will be lit alongside the symptom. That case is covered in engine warning light on the DS900X.

One point deserves emphasis: idle speed on a modern fuel-injected Voge is not adjustable. There is no idle screw to turn. Everything above is diagnosis, and the remedy lies with the cause rather than with the figure.

Where the manuals express the same window differently

The English 500R manual gives 1300 ± 100 rpm. The French edition of the same motorcycle prints 1200 to 1400 rpm, which is the identical range stated as limits rather than as a midpoint and a tolerance. Both readings define the same window.

The DS625X figure that matters most

The DS625X manual prints two power ratings for the same motorcycle: 47 kW at 9000 rpm with 57 Nm, and 35 kW at 10000 rpm with 47 Nm. Top speed is quoted as 183 km/h for the first and 160 km/h for the second.

35 kW is the A2 licence limit in Europe. The two rows are therefore the full-power motorcycle and the restricted one, and which of them applies determines whether a rider holding an A2 licence may ride it. On a used purchase the point is confirmed from the registration document and the dealer's restriction certificate, not inferred from the model name. The DS625X model page lists the remaining specification alongside it.

Two notes on reading these figures

The 300 Rally is quoted in horsepower where the rest of the range uses kilowatts. Its manual prints 29 hp at 8500 rpm, which corresponds to approximately 21 kW.

Peak power and peak torque arrive at different engine speeds, and the interval between them describes how the motorcycle delivers. The DS900X produces maximum torque at 6000 rpm and peak power at 8250, a wide and flexible spread. The SR1 produces both high in the range, at 6500 and 8500 rpm, which is normal for a small single and explains why it requires revolutions to make progress.

The remaining engine figures are set out in spark plugs and electrode gaps, valve clearances and engine oil grades and capacities. The service at which each of them falls due is in what Voge asks for at each service.
