Voge SR4 Max drive belt and variator service
When the belt, rollers and clutch on the SR4 Max are inspected, what to examine with the case open and why the transmission is replaced as a set rather than in parts.
Tools
- Clutch and variator holding tool
- Impact driver
- Torque wrench
Parts
- Drive belt
- Variator rollers
- Case gasket where fitted
A CVT transmission wears as a system. Replacing the belt alone while flat-spotted rollers remain in place produces a short-lived repair, since the worn rollers continue to load the new belt unevenly.
Inspection interval
The interval printed in the owner manual applies. In addition, the belt warrants inspection whenever the scooter's behaviour on pulling away changes, or when a chirp or slip is audible under load.
What to examine
- Belt: cracks across the teeth, frayed edges, glazing, or a width below the service limit given in the manual.
- Rollers: flat spots. A roller that is no longer round cannot change ratio smoothly.
- Clutch shoes: glazing and uneven wear. The bell is checked for scoring and blueing.
- Sliding faces: dry or gritty movement indicates that the variator is not shifting cleanly.
With the case open
All components are cleaned with brake cleaner and allowed to dry. Oil or grease on the belt, clutch or bell causes slip, so grease is confined strictly to the parts the manual specifies.
Reassembly follows the torque figures for the model, and the rear wheel is turned by hand before the engine is started to confirm that nothing binds.
