Voge SR4 Max traction control, fuel gauge and clutch take-up

Three SR4 Max owner complaints set against the manual: how the traction control light behaves, why the fuel gauge moves unevenly and what the 3 L warning means, and the centrifugal clutch.

3 min readStatus: Reported

Three complaints recur in owner accounts of the SR4 Max. None of them has been linked to a mechanical failure, and the manual explains more of each than the accounts suggest.

The traction control intervenes abruptly

Owners describe power being cut sharply rather than eased back, most noticeably on wet cobbles, painted road markings and tram lines.

The system is less progressive than the best in the class, but it acts on exactly the surfaces where a rear slide on a 214 kg scooter is a genuine risk. The manual sets out how to read it:

TCS light Meaning
Slow flash at switch-on, out once moving Normal self-check
Fast flash while riding The system is intervening
Steady on Switched off in the instrument settings, or the system has failed

TCS is on by default every time the scooter is powered up. A steady light on a machine nobody has switched off is therefore a fault, and the manual's instruction for a light that stays on while riding is to stop and contact a Voge dealer.

The manual also names the one situation in which switching it off is advisable: on very soft ground such as sand or snow, where it can reduce rear-wheel drive so far that the scooter stops. Everywhere else it asks for TCS to remain on. On wet markings the sensible response is to expect the intervention and to roll the throttle off smoothly, not to disable the system.

The fuel gauge reads unevenly

Reported as unreliable rather than broken: the display moves in steps and does not track the tank in a straight line.

The manual explains part of this directly. Fuel moves in the tank while riding, and with little fuel remaining the warning may not light consistently, which it describes as normal. It also gives the figure that makes the gauge usable: the warning turns yellow with about 3 L remaining in a 13 L tank.

That makes the warning, rather than the bar display, the reliable reference. At the warning, roughly ten litres have been used. Zeroing the trip meter at each fill and noting the distance at which the warning appears gives a range figure that can be trusted in a way the bar cannot. The manual also cautions against running the tank dry, since the fuel pump depends on the fuel around it.

Where the gauge sits at full for a long time and then falls quickly, that is a characteristic of the sender. Where it jumps around while riding, it is worth mentioning at the next service.

The clutch takes up abruptly

The SR4 Max uses a dry centrifugal clutch behind a CVT. Owners report it engaging with a step rather than progressively, sometimes with a shudder as it takes up.

The belt, the rollers and the clutch wear together as one system, and a take-up that has become abrupt over time is a service item rather than a characteristic. The inspection points and the warning signs visible with the case open are set out in SR4 Max belt and variator service. The final drive runs in its own oil, 0.25 L, which is separate from the engine's 1.9 L.

One further point from the manual

The manual notes that where the ABS is malfunctioning, pressing the ignition switch may fail to power the scooter down, and in that case the battery's negative terminal is disconnected to switch it off. That is not a routine event, but it is the one behaviour of this system most likely to be mistaken for an unrelated electrical fault.

The load figures for this scooter, which are among the few in the range whose axle limits reconcile with the stated maximum, are in weights, load capacity and axle limits. The idle and engine figures are in idle speeds and engine data.
