Voge DS900X red tyre warning: the TPMS thresholds explained

The exact pressures at which the DS900X turns a tyre red, why they sit well outside the recommended pressures, what a red bar means, and why a reading is missing in the garage.

3 min readDifficulty: EasyStatus: Confirmed

Nothing is broken. The instrument is behaving exactly as the manual describes, and the thresholds it uses are considerably wider than the pressures the same manual specifies for riding.

The DS900X thresholds

Wheel Turns red Returns to white
Front below 1.9 bar, or above 2.9 bar above 2.0 bar, or below 2.7 bar
Rear below 2.1 bar, or above 3.1 bar above 2.2 bar, or below 2.9 bar

The 525 R and 525 ACX apply a single pair of figures to both wheels: the display changes at 1.9 bar and below, or 2.9 bar and above.

Why the display appears unhelpful

The DS900X manual specifies 2.2 bar front and 2.5 bar rear for solo riding. The front warning does not appear until 1.9 bar.

That leaves 0.3 bar below the correct pressure with no indication of any kind. A tyre can be appreciably soft, the steering heavy and the shoulders wearing, while the display remains white. The system is a puncture alarm and not a pressure gauge. A gauge remains necessary, and the correct figures for every model are on the tyre pressures page.

The gap between the red threshold and the white one is deliberate. Without it the display would alternate between states each time the pressure crossed a single value, which would make the warning meaningless.

What to do when a tyre turns red

  1. Stop somewhere safe and look at the tyre. A slow puncture and a cold morning produce the same display.
  2. Measure it with a gauge, since the display reports only that a threshold has been crossed.
  3. Where it holds pressure after inflation, observe it. A tyre that turns red again within a day has a puncture, whatever its appearance suggests.

Pressure also falls with temperature, by roughly 0.1 bar for every 10 °C. A motorcycle left out through a cold night can show red in the morning with nothing wrong.

A red bar in place of a number

Where the display shows a red bar where the pressure should appear, the manual is explicit: this indicates a fault in the monitoring system and not a deflated tyre. The instrument is receiving nothing from that sensor.

The usual reasons are a sensor battery that has reached the end of its life, a sensor disturbed during a tyre change, or wheels exchanged between machines without the sensors being registered again.

Why a reading is missing in the garage

The manual states that a sensor transmits only above 25 km/h and when the pressure changes. A blank reading on a stationary motorcycle is therefore normal, and the values appear a few hundred metres into the ride.

The same behaviour explains the blank display after any work on the electrical system: disconnecting the battery erases the stored values, and they return on their own once the motorcycle is moving. That case is covered in battery removal and what it resets.

A reading that never appears once the motorcycle is moving is worth a dealer visit. One that appears after a short ride is the system working as designed.

The tyre sizes these pressures apply to are in tyre sizes by model, and the loads that make the pillion pressures necessary in weights, load capacity and axle limits.
