Storing a Voge over winter: the manual's procedure
The laying-up list printed in the Voge owner manuals, covering oil, fuel, battery, tyres, airbox and exhaust, together with the steps required before the first ride of the season.
Voge devotes a chapter of the owner manual to long-term parking. The procedure below is the manual's, with the reasoning for each step set out alongside it.
Before the motorcycle is laid up
The oil and filter are changed. Used oil is acidic, and four months in the engine does more damage than the distance that dirtied it.
The fuel tank is drained. The manual requires this directly. Where draining is impractical, the alternative is to fill the tank completely and add a stabiliser: a full tank contains no air in which water can condense, whereas a half-empty one does.
The airbox intake and the exhaust outlet are blocked with cloth soaked in fresh oil. This excludes moisture from the engine, moisture being what corrodes bores through the valves.
The battery is removed. The case is washed with mild soapy water, corrosion is cleaned from the terminals, and the battery is stored above 0 degrees C.
Tyres are set to the correct pressure and, where possible, the weight is taken off them. A tyre left at low pressure for months takes a flat spot that does not recover.
The motorcycle is washed completely, rubber components are treated with a protectant and painted panels waxed. Salt and road film left in place over winter are what pit fasteners.
It is covered with a dry cloth in a ventilated space. A sealed plastic cover traps condensation against the paint, which is worse than no cover at all.
Where the battery remains in the motorcycle
For storage exceeding a month the manual calls for the battery to be fully charged and both terminals disconnected, positive last. Modern motorcycles draw current even when switched off, and a discharged lead-acid battery sulphates permanently within weeks.
Returning the motorcycle to service
- Clean it again and remove the cloth from the airbox and the exhaust before anything else.
- Change the oil and filter a second time.
- Refit the battery: positive first, negative last.
- Start the engine and allow it to warm before riding.
What the process resets
Reconnecting the battery clears the stored tyre pressure readings, which refresh only above 25 km/h. The clock and the application pairing also require setting again. These are covered in battery removal and what it resets.
