Voge DS900X dashcam: app connection and file transfer

How the DS900X camera is paired with a phone: the network name shown on the instrument display, the factory password, the application required, and how recordings are retrieved.

The DS900X camera is of limited use until the phone application is communicating with it. The procedure is not in the owner manual; it appears in a separate two page tutorial issued by the importer.

How the connection works

The camera creates its own WiFi hotspot. The phone joins that hotspot and the application communicates with the camera across it. No internet connection is involved and no account is required.

Connection procedure

  1. Install the application. It is published by Boshi Technology, with separate Android and iPhone versions. The tutorial supplies a QR code for each; a search of the store under that name locates the same application.
  2. Switch the recorder on. The instrument display then shows a network name in the form MT68_XXXX, in which the final four characters are unique to the individual camera.
  3. Join that network from the phone's WiFi settings. The name to select is the MT68 entry displayed on the instrument panel.
  4. Enter the password. The factory setting is 12345678.
  5. Open the application. When the link is established the WiFi icon within the application turns green. An icon that remains grey generally indicates that the phone has reverted to mobile data or rejoined a domestic network.

Changing the password

The factory password is identical on every camera of this type. Anyone within WiFi range who knows the model can therefore join the camera's network, view the live preview and retrieve its files.

The application provides the setting to change it. This is a recommendation rather than an instruction from the tutorial, but it removes a straightforward exposure and takes a moment.

Operating the camera

  • Selecting the application icon enters preview mode, the live view from the camera.
  • Front and rear cameras are switched from the same screen.
  • The gallery button lists the recordings. Selecting one plays it back and allows it to be downloaded to the phone.
  • Disconnecting when finished prevents the phone from continuing to route data through a hotspot that has no internet connection.

Two practical considerations

Recordings are overwritten. A dashcam records in a loop and replaces the oldest file once the card is full. Material that may be needed should be downloaded the same day.

Transfers over the hotspot are slow. Full quality video across a local WiFi link takes time. The transfer is best carried out with the motorcycle parked and the ignition on rather than at the roadside.

The camera is one of several functions reached through the instrument menu; the remainder, including the service reminder reset, are described in Voge riding modes. Model specifications are on the DS900X model page, and the tutorial itself is listed among the DS900X documents.
